Veil waterproofing — is when a waterproofing compound, mainly an injectable resin or gel, is injected not into the structure of the wall, foundation, or foundation slab itself, but behind it, thereby forming a solid waterproofing carpet or membrane from the outside of the problem area on the contact wall ground. The veil protection is performed mainly below ground level.

When it is necessary to apply a veil waterproofing?

The veil waterproofing method is used mainly when:

  • There is no access to the problem area of the wall or foundation from the outside
  • External waterproofing of the building is missing or has fallen into disrepair
  • The brick, butter, or concrete from which the foundation or walls are made are not in the best condition and ordinary injection into the body of the structure can cause more harm than good (for example, destroying an already loose brick).

Veil waterproofing is relevant for old mansions and architectural monuments in the city center. With the manual method of applying a waterproofing coating, we, in fact, make up for the very external waterproofing of the wall or foundation that is missing or has become unusable after the expiration of time from the inside, thereby solving the root of the problem associated with water leaks and the destruction of the foundation. In fact, by performing veil insulation, we create a veil barrier to the incoming water and moisture to approach the problem area of the wall or foundation.

What materials are used for the veil waterproofing:

  • Injectable helium compositions
  • Polyurethane resin
  • Micro-cements and hydrophobic concrete

The task of these materials is to form a continuous waterproofing membrane on the outside of the problem area (wall or foundation slab) on the contact ground wall. Thereby protecting the necessary surface from moisture and water ingress.

In which structures can the method of veil waterproofing be used?

  • Architectural monuments
  • Tunnels
  • Underground parking lots
  • Concrete tanks
  • Administrative buildings
  • Private houses

You can see in detail how the process of the installation of the veil waterproofing takes place on the following video:

The technology of the installation of the veil waterproofing – in stages:

To perform a veil injection into a brick or concrete wall, the following steps are performed:

  1. Marking of injection centers – where injectors will be installed in the future.
  2. Drilling boreholes (holes) in the wall or slab, in 30 sm increments in a stagged manner.
  3. Installation of injectors or so-called packers – hollow pipes, through which the injection compound will be supplied under pressure in the future.
  4. Injections of injection material under pressure with the help of special equipment for a problematic design for a veil filling.
  5. Removal of packers and sealing of injection holes with a special expanding sealant.

The injection of the veil membrane to create a continuous veil begins at the bottom of the structure, and then the injected material is gradually applied upwards. This is done in order to create the right effect and fill all possible voids.

Price of Veil waterproofing

One of the main disadvantages of the veil method of protecting foundations and basements is the price. The high price is due to two facts:

  1. The prices of imported and high-quality injection materials for the application of the veil are quite expensive (and cheap materials will not last long).
  2. During the production of the veil injection with helium injection materials or polyurethane resins, a sufficiently large amount of material is used for the construction (walls or slabs).

A large consumption is obtained due to the fact that the material is supplied under pressure and, accordingly, penetrates beyond the structural and not only into the space between the wall and the ground, but also the voids formed behind the injection site, and there can be quite a lot of voids.

Alternative to the veil waterproofing

If it is necessary to perform waterproofing works from inside the building, an alternative to the installation of a veil waterproofing will be the performance of conventional injection waterproofing with the injection of polyurethane resins or gels into the body of the structure and cold seams.

In order to perform high-quality waterproofing from the inside, without resorting to veil insulation, it is best to use a set of measures:

  1. Protection of cold seams, concreating seams and interlocking seams by the method of their stitching, layer-by-layer sealing of special sealants, and injection (interlocking seams can sometimes not be injected, but only strengthened by the method of their stitching and layer-by-layer sealing o expanding sealant). You can read more about the waterproofing of joints here – “Sealing and waterproofing of joints – concrete, cold and deformation“.
  2. Injection into the body of the structure
  3. Application of a special waterproofing material working on negative water pressure (from outside to inside), according to the type of Polymer-mineral elastic waterproofing from the inside without the use of a veil method of waterproofing HydroPaz.
